With the Kids Off to College, It Was Finally Her Turn for a Dream Shower

Her Style, Her Colors, and a Little Luxury That Stayed Inside the Budget

Andrea's kids were heading off to college, and she decided it was time to do something fun for herself. She was done with the old tub and wanted a walk-in shower with a seat, some tile with real personality, and a glass door, all without spending a fortune. We sat down together, went through the options and what each one would cost, and put together a plan that put the money into the shower and kept the vanity and floor she already had. Eight days later, she had the dream bath she'd been picturing.

Before the glass went in: the tiled seat, the short wall that frames it, and the river pebble floor.

Done With the Old Tub, and Ready for Something Fun

When I met with Andrea, she already had a pretty good idea of what she wanted. The old tub was coming out, and in its place she wanted a walk-in shower with a seat, a new valve, tile walls, and some tile that would make her smile every morning. What she wasn't sure about was how to choose the tile and finishes, so I walked her through the choices that would fit her style and her budget, and she picked every one of them herself.

A Messy Job, Kept Clean Every Single Day

Tearing out an old tub is messy work, and this bathroom sat at the top of the stairs, so before demo day I covered the hallway, the stairs, and the whole path to the outside door. I did all the cutting, wood and tile alike, out on the porch, so the dust stayed outside instead of settling all over her bedroom. Then I built a short wall to frame the seat and hold the glass, set a pre-formed shower base that's shaped to carry every drop of water to the drain, and sealed every seam in the walls before a single tile went up.

White square tile with an emerald green band, a new valve and a grab bar, all over sealed walls.

The finished shower: sliding glass, a tiled seat, the emerald band, and a river pebble floor.

Her Colors, Her Tile, and a Floor That Feels Good on Bare Feet

I always encourage my clients to have fun with tile, and Andrea did. She chose clean white tile for the walls and a band of emerald green that runs all the way around the shower, so it catches your eye the moment you walk in. The floor is a soft layer of river pebbles that feels great on bare feet, and a sliding glass door on a black rail ties it all together. Once the shower was done, I painted the walls a light green and hung the new bath hardware she had picked out.

Spending the Money Where It Mattered Most

There's always a little give and take when someone wants a beautiful bathroom without overspending, and I don't mind that one bit. Andrea's vanity and floor were still in good shape, so we kept them and put the money into the shower, where she'd notice it every day. She did her part too, making her tile choices on time and buying the hardware herself, so we never sat around waiting on materials. When a client is that on board with the build, the whole job runs smoothly, and this one was a real pleasure.

The vanity and floor stayed, so the money went into the shower.
