How a Sun-Beaten Deck Got Ready for a Wedding Reception, Without Replacing a Single Rail

Ready Before Their Daughter’s

Wedding Reception

The homeowners wanted their back deck looking like new before their daughter’s wedding reception. The rail caps were twisted, the boards chipped and full of holes. I saved the rails instead of replacing them, then patched, primed and gave everything two coats of deck paint. It was ready before the big day.

Before. Worn finish, dried-out boards.

The Sun Was Winning

This deck gets full sun most of the day. Sun is hard on treated wood. Skip the upkeep for a few years and the finish wears down to bare wood, the boards dry out, and the rails start to move.

Chips, Holes and Wear

A couple of deck boards had big chips missing. Years of use left small holes all over. Every guest would walk up these stairs.

Before. The stairs to the yard.

Before. Twisted caps pulling out of line.

Save the Rail Caps, or Replace Them?

Several caps were twisted bad. Replacing them sounds simple, but new boards have to dry out before you can paint them. Paint them too soon and you trap the moisture, and the board rots early. With a wedding on the calendar, waiting wasn't a good option.

Clamps, Screws and a Little Patience

So I tried to save them. Strong wood clamps, slow pressure, and to my surprise the boards twisted back into place. I screwed them down with 3" deck screws. When the clamps came off, the boards stayed put.

During. Caps back in line and screwed down.

After. One smooth line, end to end.

One Clean, Continuous Line

Some joints still didn't line up. I sanded them down so the rail runs as one smooth line, with nothing sticking out on either side. Then I filled every hole in the decking with exterior-grade wood filler.

Prime the Bare Wood, Then Two Coats

Any raw wood got primed first. Then two finish coats of Sherwin-Williams deck paint on the decking, rails and stairs. I like it because it goes on smooth, covers well, and cures hard in about 7 to 10 days.

During. Primer down, finish coats going on.

After. Saved, not replaced.

The Rails I Almost Replaced

Same corner, same caps. Straight, smooth and sealed.

Stairs Fit for Guests

Every chip patched, every hole filled, two fresh coats top to bottom. The first thing guests saw coming up from the yard.

After. Same stairs, ready for the party.

After. Ready for the big day.

Ready for the Wedding Reception

The homeowners were excited, and relieved. Their guests could move through the house and out onto the deck for fresh air during the reception. Four days, start to finish.
