A New Townhome, a Moving Day Coming Fast, and One Day to Paint the Home Office

Patched, Prepped and Painted in One Day, Before the Movers Came

One of my repeat clients sold her home and bought a townhome in the same neighborhood, and the movers were coming in a couple of days. She wanted the office and closet in the same medium taupe she loved in the old house, in a quality paint with a little sheen that would stand the test of time. I started the way I always do, with the prep, then applied two finish coats of Benjamin Moore and had it done before the move.

Before. The office in its old, light color, ready for prep.

A Room That Didn't Feel Like Home Yet

After years in the same house, my clients decided to downsize into a townhome right here in the neighborhood. The office walls were a color that was too light for them, and she wanted the room to feel like the one they had enjoyed in their old home. The movers were coming in a couple of days, so we set one day on the calendar to get it done.

The Closet Gets the Same Care

The closet got the same treatment as the office walls. I patched, sanded and worked the taupe in around the shelf brackets and up into the corners, so it matches the room when the doors are open. A closet is easy to rush, but it’s part of the room, so it gets done right too.

The closet, done in the same medium taupe as the office.

During. The new taupe going on beside the old color.

Prep First, Then the First Coat

I started the way I always do, with the prep. I patched the holes, sanded the walls smooth, taped the baseboards to keep paint spatter off them, and laid drop cloths to protect the hardwood floors. Once the walls were ready, the taupe started going on, and you could see the difference right away.

First Coat On by Lunchtime

I got to the townhome first thing in the morning, and the job went smooth with no delays. By lunch, the first coat was on every wall in the office and the closet.

During. First coat on, baseboards still taped.

During. First coat drying on the window wall.

Why I Waited Before the Second Coat

Normally I let the first coat dry overnight before the second one goes on, because paint needs time to set up. This job didn't have a night to spare, so I took a break for a few hours to let the first coat dry, then came back in the afternoon and put on the second coat. That gave the paint the time it needed and still got the room done the same day.

Done Before the Moving Truck

She chose a high-quality paint with a little sheen, not too much, so the walls will last a long time and hold up to daily use. The room came out a warm, medium taupe, just like the office they enjoyed in their old home. She was happy with the work and grateful it was finished before the move. One less thing to worry about.

After. Two coats of medium taupe, tape off, ready for move-in.
