How Free Boards From a Torn-Down House Became a Dry Wood Shed in One Day

A Dry Place for Firewood, Built with Repurposed Boards

A longtime client had a new wood-burning stove put in her living room, and she needed a dry place to keep her firewood through the winter. I built her a wood shed onto the side of her old tractor shed and sided it with boards she picked up for free from a house that was torn down. It took one day, and she was thrilled.

A New Wood Stove Needs Dry Firewood

This client has called me for a lot of work over the years, so when she had a new wood-burning stove put in her living room, she called again. She needed a shed to keep a winter's worth of firewood dry, and she wanted it built right onto the side of the old shed where she keeps her lawn tractor. She'd also picked up a stack of old boards for free on Facebook Marketplace, and she asked if I could work them into the build.

The Old Shed Wasn't Square, Plumb or Level

As soon as I started laying out the new shed, I could see the old one was out of whack. It wasn't square, plumb or level, so I couldn't just build off of it and hope for the best. I made a few small adjustments, laid the new shed out square to the side of the old one, and lined up the roof so the metal panels would come out nice and even.

During. Laid out square to the old shed, with the roof lined up.

After. Rafters and metal roof panels, even from one end to the other.

Taking Time on the Layout Paid Off in the Roof

The layout took a while, but that's the part that makes everything after it go right. The build went as planned, and the roof worked out perfect, with the metal panels running even all the way across.

Old Boards, Saved From the Landfill

I like these small, fun projects, and I like the challenge of giving old wood a second life. These boards came off a house someone tore down, and they weren't going into the landfill on my watch. I put them up vertically on the walls, and now they're doing a real job again.

After. Free boards from a torn-down house, put up vertically.

After. Small gaps between the boards let air move through the stacked wood.

A Few Gaps Let the Firewood Breathe

Some of the old boards left small gaps between them, and in a wood shed, that's a good thing. Firewood needs air moving around it to dry out and stay dry, so it all worked out fine.

Done in One Day, and Ready for Winter

The whole job took one day. By the end of it, she had a dry place for her firewood, and she was thrilled that her free boards ended up somewhere useful instead of in the landfill. That's a win for everyone.

After. Ready to stack a winter's worth of firewood.
