With the Kids Grown and Gone, a 1980s Master Bath Finally Gets Its Fresh Remodel

A Custom Tile Shower, a Floor With Some Personality, and a Vanity Built to Last

Mark and Joan had lived in this Weaverville home for more than twenty years, and with their two girls off to college and starting careers of their own, they decided it was finally time to treat themselves to a better master bath. We took out the tired 1980s fiberglass shower, the linoleum and the builder-grade vanity, and replaced them with a custom tile walk-in shower, a tile floor with accent squares set in by hand, and a new stained wood vanity with a granite top. The whole job took eight days, and Joan was thrilled with the way it turned out, which made Mark happy too.

A Bathroom Still Living in the 1980s

We first worked for Mark and Joan a year earlier, when we repainted the outside of the house and made some repairs, so when they were ready to move inside, they started with the master bath. The house was built in the early 1980s, and the bathroom was still the original, with a plain oak vanity and a cultured marble top and sink, which is what you found in most spec houses of that time.

A Corroded Shower Door and a Fiberglass Stall

The shower was a one-piece fiberglass stall with a molded seat, and the door had corroded so badly over the years that it was past saving. With their careers moving ahead and the kids living their own lives, Mark and Joan decided this was the time to invest in a few luxuries for themselves instead of simply patching up the old shower.

Before: the fiberglass stall with its molded seat, with the old door already off.

Before: the old linoleum in the toilet room, with the toilet pulled for the new floor.

Linoleum Floors That Had Done Their Time

The floors were sheet linoleum in the shower and toilet room and worn carpet at the vanity, so we planned one tile floor to run through the whole bath and tie it together. Mark and Joan wanted that floor to stand out, which is the fun part of tile, because you can add accents and mix things up to give a plain floor some real interest.

A Second-Floor Job, With the Rest of the House Protected

There were no big surprises on this one, and the job went smoothly from start to finish, but the bathroom sits on the second floor, so every trip in and out went through the hallway and down the stairs. We laid drop cloths down the hallways and carpet protector on the stairs before the first piece came out, which kept the rest of the house clean while we took the old floors down to the subfloor and got it ready for tile.

During: the old flooring out and the subfloor bare, ready for prep.

After: the mosaic shower floor, the tiled curb and the new glass door.

A Custom Tile Walk-In Shower With a Little More Room

In place of the old stall, we built a custom tile walk-in shower, and by leaving out the molded seat, we gained a little extra room to move around. The shower floor is small mosaic tile that matches the accents in the bathroom floor, with a tiled curb at the entry and a sliding door with clear, frameless glass panels that let the tile work show.

A Built-In Niche for Soaps and Shampoo

Mark and Joan wanted a built-in shelf for soaps and shampoo, so we built a niche right into the wall with a shelf across the middle. We framed it with the same mosaic tile that runs as a band around the shower, which turns a simple storage spot into one of the nicest details in the room.

After: the tiled niche, framed in mosaic and tied into the accent band.

After: the rain head, hand wand and brushed nickel valve, with the mosaic accent band behind them.

A Rain Shower Head and a Hand Wand, in Brushed Nickel

The new shower has a rain shower head up top and a hand wand on a slide bar, so it's easy to rinse off, clean the shower or adjust the height for whoever is using it. We replaced every faucet and fixture in the bath with brushed nickel, which gives the whole room a clean, up-to-date look against the warm brown tile.

A Stained Wood Vanity, a Granite Top and a Floor That Stands Out

The old oak vanity gave way to a custom wood-stained vanity with a granite countertop, a new sink and a brushed nickel faucet, which gives the room a much richer look. Underneath it, the new tile floor runs through the whole bathroom, and we set mosaic accent squares into it here and there so the floor has some character of its own.

After: the new vanity and granite top, with one of the accent squares in the floor.
